I will never forget my very first live shot. It was for an NBC affiliate in a medium size market. The story was a light-hearted one – a local museum in a historic district that was opening its doors after being closed for many years. Quite honestly I don’t know that the viewers could get past my high-pitched Minnie Mouse voice (obviously from nerves) to listen to the story. I also remember we lost our signal to our live shot just moments before the anchor was to introduce me and the station was screaming at my photographer on the phone to dial in on another number. He didn’t have a pen or paper so he was in turn screaming at me to remember the number. I was clearly nervous about going live for the very first time in just a few minutes (that is if my photographer and the engineer back at the station were able to fix the problem) that I knew I couldn’t remember my own phone number at the time. I handled the problem by finding a stick and literally writing the number in the dirt. And in just the nick of time, the problems were fixed and there I was on live television doing my first live news report.
I can humbly share with you that by the time I left the news industry, my voice had lowered probably 3 octaves; doing live newscasts and live reports in the field were as familiar as brushing my teeth. I was an investigative reporter and anchor and I was no longer getting those “fluff” stories, as we refer to them in the business. My experiences in the newsroom afforded me many opportunities. I worked with and learned from some of the best in the news industry. I covered stories that will forever be a part of history – like the day I covered George W. Bush in the Sarasota school on September 11, 2001 and was one of the first reporters to share the news with the world that America was under attack. I learned to be creative, work on very tight deadlines and adapt to change quickly. All of these experiences have brought me to this career path, to this website and to writing this blog.
With more than 15 years’ experience in the media, I am excited to be where I am right now – helping my clients gain positive exposure, create effective and targeted marketing and advertising campaigns and dominate the on-line world largely in part to social media marketing. We are a solutions-oriented agency (obviously, when we don’t have pens on us, we will just take notes with a stick in the sand). We are incredibly creative. And we are results driven.
