Don’t get sucked in!

Practically every marketing expert across the country is affirming social media to be (again) the most powerful marketing tool for 2014.  It’s not like this should come as a surprise.  Until advertisers figure out another way to reach millions of people, multiple times a day, with a different message and virtually for free – social media is the advertising MVP!  For agencies like MC PR that manage marketing and advertising with a huge focus on social media marketing we know how time consuming this can be.  Most of our clients are on multiple social platforms; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Houzz, Pinterest, Instagram, Yelp and the list goes on an on.  And let’s face it, most of these sites were originally designed to be “social” – a place where we can go to get connected, read funny stories, look at family pictures of your best friend from high school while also hoping that pictures of you in college don’t resurface. Beware!  Enter with caution!  Unless you have a limitless amount of disposable time.

Here are some tips to make sure while working on your social media marketing you don’t get sucked in to the news feed waisting valuable time you could be working on another project:

  1. Set a time limit!   Make sure you set aside a specified time during your day to manage your social media updates.  Give yourself an hour.  If you set a time limit you’ll feel more pressure to get it done and less likely to “play”.
  2. Stay focused!  This is the tough part and this is the most likely reason you spend too much time on social media sites.  Know what you need to accomplish (marketing, marketing, marketing) and put your blind folds on to anything that pops up in the news feed!  This is not your “social” time, this is your time to blast your marketing message to the masses!  Stay focused!
  3. Take on one platform at a time!  If you’re new to the social media marketing game, take baby steps.  We suggest starting with Facebook due to it’s 500+ million audience.  And you can use tools like hoot suite to help you manage multiple sites once you’re ready to expand.
  4. It’s okay to be “unsocial”! We also recommend turning your chat “off” so while you’re working on-line people don’t message you and distract you from getting work done.  While in marketing mode, wear your company hat and not your favorite weekend fedora.  Right now, it’s company time!
